1856 Tesla: almost-forgotten genius
Nikola Tesla (d. January 7, 1943), the Serb-American electrical engineer, inventor of the alternating current (AC) motor, was born on this day at Smiljan, Lika, "at the stroke of midnight" with lightning striking during a summer storm. Tesla's birthplace, Smiljan, Lika, reminds me of a place named "Siljan," in Sweden. Wikipedia says this about it:
"The Siljan Ring is a ring of lakes in Sweden that traces the remnants of a eroded meteorite crater. With a diameter of 55 km, the Siljan is the largest impact crater in Europe."
